SPEAKERS

Prof-Luc
Prof. Dr. Luc Biedermann
University Hospital Zurich

Prof. Dr. Luc Biedermann has been a board-certified specialist for Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Internal Medicine since 2012. His special focus as a clinician in the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology of the University Hospital Zurich (USZ), Switzerland, is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE) and other immune mediated gastrointestinal diseases. Since 2017 he has been head of IBD and EoE within the USZ department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology. His main clinical and research interests include epidemiology, natural history and course of disease, environmental factors, intestinal microbiota as well as drug development and clinical trials in IBD and EoE. Regarding EoE, it has been his pleasure for many years to host Prof. Dr. Alex Straumann, who first described EoE in 1994 (simultaneously and independently with Prof. Steven Attwood), for an intensive research collaboration and joint specialised unique outpatient EoE clinic at the USZ.

A/Prof Gareth Walker
Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, QLD

Associate Professor Gareth Walker is the Clinical Lead for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Research at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Conjoint Head of the Walker Laboratory at the University of Queensland, and an Honorary Scientist at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. He completed his PhD and advanced IBD training under Professor Tariq Ahmad in Exeter, UK, where his doctoral research in precision medicine identified NUDT15 variants associated with thiopurine-induced myelosuppression in Caucasian patients. He also contributed to several pivotal studies, including investigations into faecal calprotectin pathways in primary care and the landmark PANTS study. In 2024, he was elected to the ANZ IBD Scientific Committee. His current research focuses on immunological predictors of biologic response, remote disease monitoring using point-of-care testing, and large-scale data linkage analyses to uncover healthcare disparities.
